just add sound
to your city
Add Sound to Your City is a national initiative which, driven by music, is collaborating with select cities to enhance their identities. Fusing group and urban identities.
Combined elements which actively contribute towards city’s or region’s unique identity include local and business communities, educational institutions and associations, as well as arts & culture. Each participating city will therefore have its own contribution combinations, providing a specific sound that will have relevance and usage opportunities for a plethora of groups ranging from orchestras to DJs and rappers. Artists will therefore have access to an instantly identifiable music source for development and inclusion purposes.
The search for, and finding of, the sound of participating cities will be taking place simultaneously across all regions. This process of establishing each group’s sound will be captured on film, in the form of a developmental documentary.
All national Add Sound to Your City developments and updates can be found here.

Niet alleen tijdens dit project ontstaat er een schat aan nieuwe muziek, ook later zal er nog veel nieuwe muziek ontstaan die voortkomt uit de basis die wordt weggezet.

A good musical basis has great spin-off potential. Music connects and triggers action.
All project developments in the city can be found on this website. This is also a permanent and living platform, where, among other things, many project-related music and videos can be found.
A documentary is made for each participating city, resulting in unique “portraits” of Dutch cities.
During the project and in later phases, everyone can get to work with the sound of the city. Musicians, companies, schools and the municipality itself can make their own version (or have it made) or use it as inspiration for new music.
Diversity is one of the key features of this project. There are several types of prizes to be won, just think of the different music genres. Yet in the end only one sound can be the sound of the city.

A good musical basis has great spin-off potential. Music connects and why not keep going when new methods and collaborations arise?
The relevance and value of music as part of human nature cannot be underestimated, and is more important now than ever before. It binds communities, regions and nations, whilst providing relevance to a multitude of experiences from the past, current and those in the future. Project Add Sound to Your City is a national initiative, representing individual cities and regions musically, making a creative patchwork of what comprises a country with a global reputation in a multitude of musical genres. In effect: the musical DNA of cities and regions in the Netherlands.
The very nature of Add Sound to Your City encapsulates community spirit and for this to be effective, multi level collaboration is integral. This is extremely wide ranging and is further detailed via this introductory platform. Importantly, collaboration ensures not only interaction within the community but also between groups, sometimes those that traditionally have not worked together before. The result is the representation of a cross section of the community, as well as collective commercial interests, regional and national. Diversity and inclusivity within each distinct area.
The Add Sound to Your City overriding objective is to celebrate community and leverage regional identity through music. In addition, as the project is an ongoing initiative, these musical identities will have a multitude of uses promoting and enhancing awareness of community cohesion and oneness. For partners and collaborators it provides platforms to develop local and national businesses, as appropriate, whilst for the youth is presents creative engagement opportunities and potentially even career determining moments.
From the outset it is essential to understand that this is not a one-off project but an initiative which evolves over, and adapts with time, and potentially carries on indefinitely, building upon each development and creation. This is pure legacy building and ranges from education platforms to collaborative business opportunities with partnerships expected to be ongoing with regular evaluation and adjustment phases to maximise cultural relevance and project effectiveness.
